Malaysia JPJ Window Tint Legal Limits

Under the Road Transport Act 1987 and JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan) regulations, all motor vehicles must comply with these minimum VLT percentages.

Window Position Minimum VLT Status at Minimum Notes
Front Windscreen Legal ≥70% Strictest limit — driver visibility is critical
Front Side Windows 50% Legal ≥50% Driver and front passenger windows
Rear Side Windows 30% Legal ≥30% Rear passenger windows behind B-pillar
Rear Windscreen 30% Legal ≥30% Same limit as rear side windows

* VLT = Visible Light Transmission. A higher % means more light passes through (clearer). A lower % means darker tint. These limits are enforced by JPJ under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333). Violators face fines of RM300–RM2,000 and mandatory tint removal.

FAQ

Window Tinting Laws Malaysia FAQ

What does VLT% mean for window tinting?

+

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light that passes through the tint film. A higher VLT% means more light gets through (lighter/clearer tint). A lower VLT% means less light passes (darker tint). For example, 70% VLT is relatively clear, while 20% VLT is very dark. JPJ regulations set minimum VLT percentages to ensure drivers maintain adequate visibility.

What is the fine for illegal window tint in Malaysia?

+

Under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), driving a vehicle with illegal window tint can result in a compound fine of RM300 to RM2,000. More importantly, JPJ officers can require you to remove the illegal tint on the spot or within a stipulated time. Repeated offences can lead to higher penalties and potential summons to court. Always ensure your tint shop installs film that meets JPJ's legal minimums.

Can I use darker tint on my rear windows than my front windows?

+

Yes. JPJ regulations allow progressively darker tint as you go further back in the vehicle. Front windscreen requires at least 70% VLT (lightest restriction), front side windows require at least 50% VLT, and both rear side windows and rear windscreen require at least 30% VLT. Many car owners use 70% on the front windscreen, 50% on front side windows, and 20–30% on rear windows to maximise privacy while staying legal.

Do tint shops in Malaysia guarantee their film meets JPJ limits?

+

Reputable tint shops will advise you on legal VLT options and use film that comes with official manufacturer documentation showing VLT ratings. Always ask for the VLT specification sheet for the film being installed. Budget shops may use unspecified film with inconsistent VLT values.
