Your car's paintwork has 4 distinct layers. Knowing which layer is damaged determines the repair method and cost.
Fingernail does not catch. Appears as light swirl marks or haze. DIY polishes (e.g. Meguiar's ScratchX) can fully remove these. No workshop needed.
Fingernail catches. Scratch has white edges or base colour exposed. Cannot be polished out β requires spot repaint or full panel respray. Cost: RM150β400.
Bare grey primer or shiny metal visible. Rust will form quickly if not treated. Requires full panel respray and rust-proofing primer. Urgency: High. Cost: RM200β600+.
All prices in RM. Estimates based on Malaysian market rates. Actual cost varies by car size, panel, and workshop location.

For scratches that penetrate through the clear coat into the colour or primer layers, DIY is not recommended for a long-lasting result. Touch-up pens (RM15β40) can prevent rust on small chips, but they will not produce a colour-matched, smooth finish. Deep scratches require colour-matched spray paint, primer sealing, wet-sanding and polishing β skills best left to a professional panel beater or auto body workshop to avoid making the damage more visible.
A single panel respray (e.g. one door or one bumper) in Malaysia typically costs RM150β400 for a sedan. Bumpers are usually cheaper (RM100β300) as they are plastic and easier to remove. Full-car resprays can range from RM2,500 to RM8,000 depending on paint quality and preparation work. Premium paint correction, pearl or metallic finishes, and certified paintless dent repair (PDR) specialists will command higher rates, particularly in the Klang Valley.
Standard Third Party and Third Party Fire and Theft policies do NOT cover scratches or dents to your own vehicle. Comprehensive insurance (motor insurance with own-damage cover) does cover accidental damage β but you must file an official police report and submit a claim. Small scratches are often not worth claiming because your No-Claim Discount (NCD) bonus may be reduced at renewal, which increases future premiums. For damage under RM500, paying out of pocket is usually more economical. Check your policy details and consult your insurer before deciding.
Act quickly β rust can spread significantly within weeks in Malaysia's humid climate. Immediate steps: (1) Clean the chip thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. (2) Apply a rust converter or rust inhibitor spray to neutralise existing oxidation. (3) Apply a matching touch-up paint pen or primer pen to seal the bare metal from moisture. (4) For a lasting fix, take the car to an auto body shop for a proper spot repair with primer and colour-matched respray. Do not use masking tape or wax over the rust β these trap moisture and accelerate corrosion.
