Monsoon Season Car Care: A Malaysian Driver's Checklist
Malaysia’s monsoon season (roughly October to March on the east coast, and briefly again around April–May in the west) puts more strain on a car than most drivers realise. It’s not just about the rain itself — it’s the combination of standing water, sudden flooding, and near-constant humidity that follows.
Before the rain hits
Check your wiper blades. Malaysian heat degrades rubber quickly, and a wiper that’s fine in dry weather can smear uselessly the moment real rain starts. If they’re more than a year old, replace them before the season starts, not during the first downpour.
Top up or replace your tyres if the tread is marginal. Wet-weather braking distances increase dramatically on worn tyres, and flash flooding on Malaysian roads means standing water is common even outside heavy rain.
Have your underbody rust-proofed or at least inspected, especially if you drive through flood-prone areas regularly. Standing water carries road salt, debris, and contaminants that accelerate corrosion on exposed metal.
During the season
Avoid driving through water higher than your car’s air intake if at all possible — this is the single most common cause of catastrophic (and expensive) engine damage during Malaysian flash floods. If you do get caught, do not restart the engine if it stalls in deep water; get it towed and inspected first.
Humidity inside the cabin during monsoon months also encourages mould growth in air-conditioning systems and upholstery. Running the AC on a dry/recirculate setting for a few minutes before switching it off helps reduce moisture buildup in the evaporator.
After the rain
Rainwater in Malaysia isn’t neutral — it picks up pollutants, dust, and acidic compounds on the way down, especially near industrial areas. Left to dry on paint, it can leave water spots and etching over time. A wash within a day or two of heavy rain (rather than waiting for your usual schedule) helps prevent this, particularly if you park outdoors.
If you regularly drive through flooded or waterlogged roads, it’s worth having a workshop check your brake performance and underbody condition every few months during the wettest part of the year — not just at your usual service interval.
